Customers who sign a two-year contract can obtain the gadget for $199 and $299, depending on whether it comes with 8 gigabytes or 16 gigabytes of memory.

Customers could purchase the first version of the iPhone in the U.S. without a contract, but AT&T would only activate the device with a two-year commitment. Many buyers figured out how to “unlock” the original phones and sold them overseas.
